Using their ‘Social Sentiment Index’, IBM have charted the progress of steampunk from 1800s to the present day via books, films and fashion – also throwing social media measurements into the mix. It’s an interesting take on a trend that shows every sign of further infiltrating the mainsteam. And there’s a really fascinating article here on how the new science of social media trend spotting has been applied to steampunk in this case.

I’m a little concerned about steamunk fashion hitting the high street, mainly because I fear it’ll lose that hand crafted, artisan quality to it that makes steampunk items all the more special. A mass produced, off the hanger version of the same thing isn’t going to be as good as the real deal. Still, it’s awesome to see steampunk gaining popularity :)
